Mustangs rise, Coogs fall after shocking upset; Basketball media days AAC Blogger Media Poll: Week 8

Things got a little crazy the week before Halloween in the newly dubbed Anarchy Athletic Conference.

The state of Texas is still trying to wrap its brain around the SMU Mustangs’ shocking 38-16 upset of the No. 11 Houston Cougars in Dallas – an upset that saw the Coogs fall completely out of the AP Top 25, and earned the Mustangs their first vote to be ranked in the poll in years (that’s not a joke, they actually got a vote).

And while the Mustangs’ victory was indeed the main course, there was a buffet of upsets across the American Athletic Conference this past weekend.

First…let’s remember where everyone stood heading in to Saturday based on last week’s AAC Blogger Poll:

7

Then the fun begins…

No. 1 lost to No. 6.
No. 2 lost to No. 12.
No. 3 beat No. 4.
No. 5 beat No. 10.
No. 7 beat No. 8.
No. 9 lost to No. 11.

So, after much deliberation, here’s where the AAC stands now:

8

Full disclosure, my own rankings: 1. Navy, 2. USF, 3. Houston, 4. Temple, 5. Memphis, 6. Tulsa, 7. UCF, 8. SMU, 9. Cincy, 10. Tulane, 11. UConn, 12. East Carolina.

Think you could have made more sense of this week’s poll? I’d like to see you try.

Listen to Houston HC Tom Herman go through his post-game press conference while a rejoicing SMU locker room echoes through the media room. Glorious.

SMU took home the No. 3 ranking in the AAC preseason poll. Tough to call No. 3 sleeping on somebody, but…
